Historical note: The Air Service of the United States Army was created in 1918. In 1926 the name was changed to Air Corps, in 1942 to Army Air Forces, and in 1947 to United States Air Force. The United States Space Force was separated in 2019.

Air Corps; 1910 field regulations of the War Dept. provided for an aeronautical company of the Signal Corps; on July 18, 1914, Congress created the Aviation Section of the Signal Corps; known as the Air Service after the Aviation Act of July 24, 1917; became coordinate branch of the army by Army Reorg.
