Aircraft Diesels [Second Printing], 1940
Scope and Contents
Document Type: Book (Technical Reference).
Purpose: Informational.
Authority: Author Expertise.
Scope: Technical monograph written for a knowledgable audience by Paul H. Wilkinson. From back flap: "Mr. Wilkinson served his engineering apprenticeship with the British Thomson-Houston Company, Ltd. (English branch of the General Electric Company). Later, he went to the Royal Aircraft Establishment and spent most of his time during the World War (1914-1919) on inspection of British Military aircraft. He returned to the United States in 1921 and was with the Boeing Airplane Company as inspector of aircraft. After an intervening period of civil engineering, he returned to aviation with the Douglas Aircraft Company as inspector during the DC-2 transport contract. Subsequently, he engaged in research work on Diesel aircraft engines. He has been aviation editor of "Diesel Progress" since 1935 and has written more on the subject of Diesel aviation than anyone in the United States."
From the Cover: "AIRCRAFT DIESELS will be of value to the student of aeronautics who is seeking to broaden his knowledge of aviation; to the aeronautical engineer who realizes that progress in aviation can be accelerated by using the Diesel; to the engine manufacturer who wishes to be up-to-date and prepared for the future; to the airplane manufacturer who wishes to obtain the best performance from his products; to the airline operator and the private owner to whom safety, economy and efficiency are paramount; to those in charge of military aviation who wish to provide maximum defense for their countries; and to air-minded people who wish to know about the next important step in the progress of aviation."
Contents (from the Cover): "AIRCRAFT DIESELS is devoted exclusively to the Diesel in aviation. It outlines the basic principles upon which the engine functions and the phases and processes involved. Various kinds of fuel injection equipment, superchargers and accessories for 2-cycle and 4-cycle Diesels are described. The construction of different types of engines is presented in detail and standardized pages of data on these engines are provided for ready reference. The development and mass production of Junkers Jumo Diesels are described for the first time and the construction of the well-known Jumo 205 Diesel is given in detail. Flights of Diesel-engined aircraft are described to show that the Diesel already is past the experimental stage. Long-range transoceanic flights with the Diesel are visualized and the economic advantages to be gained thereby are given in tabular form."
