Written and published in 1916 by Francis John Kean, B.Sc. (Lond.), "1st Class Honourman in Engineerig; Temporary Second Lieutenant in the Army Service Corps (inspection Branch of Mechanical Transport)."

From the Preface: "The contents of this book formed the subject matter of a special course of ten lectures given by the Author at the Regent Street Polytechnic, London, W., during the autumn of 1915 to men of the Royal Naval Air Service, Royal Flying Corps, Designers, and Engineering Students.

My thanks are due to Mr. Robert Mitchell (Director of Education) and Professor Henry J. Spooner (Head of the Engineering School), for the kindly interest they took in my work; also to Mr. Charles Spon for his kind assistance with the book.

I trust the Reader will understand and appreciate the fact that I was not merely lecturing--I was also teaching my subject. The Lecturer lectures and the Teacher teaches; to the uninitiated the two things are the same—in reality they are very different. In this book as in my earlier book on the Petrol Engine, I have endeavoured to focus the Reader's attention on the fundamental principles of design and construction.
