(Howard) Wilkinson, "Member, Aviation/Space Writers Association; Associate Fellow, Royal Aeronautical Society; and Associate Fellow, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and author of: Diesel Aircraft Engines, 1936; Aircraft Diesels, 1940; Diesel Aviation Engines, 1942 and Aircraft Engines of the World, 1941-1962/1963." Mr. Wilkinson lived between 1895-1975.
Contents (from Preface):
"AIRCRAFT ENGINES OF THE WORLD, 1964/65 edition and now in its 21st volume, has been placed on a biennial basis. Revised to mid-January, 1965, it covers the years 1963 and 1964 during which it did not make its usual annual appearance. During this progressive period. a great deal of information accumulated which has necessitated increasing the number of pages in this edition despite the weeding-out process normally followed.
As has been customary for twenty years, the engine data are presented in standardized unit page format, in English decimal and metric measurements, with individual photographs. There are many new engines and items of equipment, particularly in the case of the gas turbines which have now entered the supersonic and VTOL era.
New features have been introduced in this edition. The gas turbine specifications now list the aircraft in which the engines are used. Additional tabulations have been included to cover VIOL, COIN and research aircraft, and their engines. All of the U.S. military aircraft now have their new model numbers as designated by the Department of Defense.
The tabulations of fuels and lubricating oils have been completely revised and now include NATO equivalents and the latest products for supersonic engines.
The gas turbine section of the book contains specifications and photographs of all the latest "big" engines which have attracted so much attention recently in aviation--the Allison T78, General Electric J93, Pratt & Whitney J58 and TF30, Bristol Siddeley Olympus 320 and 593, Rolls-Royce Conway 43, and S.N.E.C.M.A. Atar 09K and TF-106. VTOL engines such as the Bristol Siddeley Pegasus and BS.100, Rolls-Royce RB.163-31, and M.A.N./Rolls-Royce RB.153-61R, for military aircraft, are included. The smaller gas turbines are here too.
The reciprocating engines section includes the latest powerplants for fixed wing aircraft and helicopters, many of the engines now being equipped with direct fuel injection and/or turbo-superchargers.
The equipment and materials section contains information about many important new products and materials for aviation.
Statistically, the 304-page 1964/65 edition of this international reference book contains specifications of 163 gas turbines (including 42 new ones), 70 reciprocating engines (including 11 new ones), data of 3 rocketjets for aircraft, 10 pages of tabulations of aircraft and their engines listing 464 aircraft and helicopters, 4 tabulations of fuels and lubricating oils, a list of 134 earlier engines and the editions of the book in which their latest specifications appeared, and two introductions summarizing the latest activities of 42 engines manufacturers in 16 countries. The book is illustrated with 254 photographs, of which 110 are new."
