Biographical / Historical
The University Womsn's Club was organized on April 2, 1964 as an organization of UAH women faculty and faculty wives, with the purpose to promote and foster cultural activities and to promote the best interests of the University. For the young wives of the newly arriving faculty of UAH, it was a great way to meet. Some of the friendships made at the time are still alive and well. Today, the membership is comprised of women faculty, staff, spouses/significant others of faculty and staff, UAH alumnae and students, and is open to womenwho work on the UAH campus in UAH-related enterprises such as the University Fitness Center, the NSSTC, WLRH, the Alabama Credit Union, the UAH Bookstore and the Tom Bevill Center. Currently, the University Women's Club is the only organization that gives all women who are associated with UAH the opportunity for campus-wide professional networking and for social contracts and activities, both on and off campus.
During the club's early days a scholarship fund was established for students. The first fund-raiser was an Elizabethan Evening held on November 17, 1972 and $1200 was raised. The first scholarship was awarded in 1973. The first yearbook was published that same year. Silver teas were followed by the Phantom teas; the scholarship became an endowed fund with the University of Alabama System. The S.O.T.A. (Students Over Traditional Age) scholarship was added in 1986 and since 1992, Silent Auctions helped raise funds for the scholarships. By 2000, the UWC endowed scholarship had grown to over $100,000. One full and two part scholarships were awarded annually to UAH women students. Today, the Phanton Tea benefit generates over $3,000 annually, the UWC endowed scholarship fund is valued at over $160,000 and four scholarchips of $3,000 each were available for award in 2006. Officially endowed in 1980, this scholarship is one of the oldest and largest at UAH.
