Sanjoy Som presented this paper at the 2008 International Astronautical Congress. He cited substantially the 1970 Stuhlinger letter to Mary Jucunda, a nun from Zambia. In it, he answered the question "Why is so much money spent on space exploration when there are so many problems right here on Earth?".
